On August 20, 2003 Susan Ferguson would have turned 52
years old. At that time, just 3 months after her passing, we were
happy and excited to announce the establishment of the Susan Ferguson
Memorial “Dare to Care” Scholarship Fund. Perhaps we could have called
it our birthday gift to Susan, the kind of gift she loved the most, the kind
of gift intended to help others in need. We feel that this scholarship
fund is one good way to carry on the memory of our beloved Susan, and to
reinforce the importance of all that she stood for and worked for through
her many years as a nurse and nurse educator. |
|
Although knowledge
and skills were important to Susan, what made her teaching of nurses unique
was her ability to instill in her students a sincere desire to truly serve
their patients. She somehow inspired them to reach out and go the extra
mile in truly caring for their patients and in meeting their needs.
In establishing this
scholarship fund, we hope to support the Snow College South nursing program
(and other programs should funds allow) in reaffirming that spirit of
service that meant so much to Susan. Our goal is to provide on an annual
basis worthy graduates of the Snow College South Licensed Practical Nurse
program with scholarships intended to help students continue their education
in an accredited Registered Nurse program. The number of scholarships and
the actual “dollar amount” of help provided will depend upon the generosity
of our contributors. We would like to eventually expand the program to
provide help to students from other nursing programs if funds exceed our
expectations.

|
We know that Susan
would be pleased to see this scholarship fund established. There were
dozens of times Susan reached into her own pocket to help needy students,
usually anonymously. She wanted to see good caring nurses succeed.
This is our attempt to carry on her generosity, and to encourage dedication
to the ideal of service in nursing she espoused and loved. |
|
Please note that the
Susan Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund involves no costs in salary,
overhead, or any other outside costs. All of the time and energy involved
in establishing and carrying out this program come from the volunteer
efforts of Susan’s family and friends. Every penny of every contribution
will go to nursing students, and 100% of any interest earned on scholarship
funds held in the Susan Ferguson MSF account will also go to nursing
students. Contributions to the scholarship fund are tax deductible, and
donors will be sent a receipt including our Tax Identification Number as
required by the IRS.
Within our own
family our goal for this first year has been to raise at least $2,000 to get
the scholarship fund initially established. We have nearly reached that
goal already. Now we are beginning to reach outside of our own circle of
family and friends to allow generous friends of quality nursing everywhere
to join in our effort.
If you have any
questions, comments, or suggestions please e-mail Chuck Ferguson at
charles@susanferguson.org. In the meantime, we hope you will be able to
help us in this effort. |
